Graduate Schools Accredited in Accounting in New York (I-Z)

New Yorkers know how to live the good life and they also know a lot about money since there are some nationally recognized accounting graduate programs in New York that provide an exceptional opportunity for work in accounting.

The residents of New York were creative enough to invent toilet paper in 1857 and were also responsible for introducing apples to New York in the 1600s. The state was also the site of the longest baseball game ever played when Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken Jr. played a game that lasted 33 innings. New York is a state of historic “firsts” and tremendous innovation, so it’s no surprise that higher education is so respected.

Below is the second half of our list of grad schools in the state of New York that are accredited AACSB in accounting.   For the first half of our list, see Graduate Schools Accredited in Accounting in New York (A-H).

Pace University (New York)

Lubin School of Business

Established over a century ago, Pace University first opened in New York City and eventually opened another campus in Westchester, which is just north of the city. The university has several respected degrees in areas like law, nursing, and business and has almost 13,000 students in attendance at the graduate and undergraduate level. The college was started by a pair of brothers who founded a firm that was created to teach accountancy and business. The school was started with a loan of just $600 dollars and included a rented classroom in the Tribune Building in New York City.

MBA in Accounting

Obtaining an MBA in accounting from the Lubin School qualifies a student to take the CPA exam and also provides a solid understanding of important, modern business concepts. The program is designed to teach students strategy in the accounting field and to also provide a simple way to advance an accounting career to the level of upper management. The school boasts a faculty with many years of experience in the industry as well as an opportunity to intern with one of the Big Four accounting firms. Topics covered during study include accounting, auditing, payroll services, bookkeeping, and tax preparation. Upon graduation, MBA students have access to an industry that economists suggest is under tremendous growth. At least 300 employers court Pace students each year for jobs at respected companies.

MS in Accounting

Students will find they are well prepared to take the CPA exam after receiving a graduate degree in accounting from Pace. The program features flexible scheduling as well as a fast track to provide students with the type of learning environment that best suits the needs of the individual. Students will take classes that include instruction on practical application of accounting methods, as well as theories and expected growth of the profession. Students have the opportunity to intern with a major accounting firm and also benefit from the connections made during school to influential businesses located in the immediate vicinity of the school. Pace says that getting a graduate degree in accounting is one of the best ways to shorten the job hunt and expand upon job opportunities beyond entry level status.

Taxation MBA

Specializing in taxation while studying for an MBA is a terrific way to boost salary expectations and Pace cites data from O*NET which states that graduates with an MBA in taxation may earn over $101,000 a year. While enrolled in the program, students have the opportunity to gain knowledge about taxation from a number of different angles such as strategic planning, technical information, and analytical skills. The school’s proximity to several major companies means that internship opportunities abound at respected companies and that it’s possible to make valuable business connections that may turn into future offers of employment. In addition, an MBA in Taxation opens doors for work in many industries. Students don’t have to focus upon work solely in the financial sector and within taxation. Any business that deals with money, which is every business in operation today, is a potential option for employment.

Taxation MS

Taxation is a facet of the accounting world that’s in constant flux. New laws, changes, and new technology constantly impact the industry. An MS in Taxation at Pace ensures that graduates are able to understand the complexity behind today’s tax rules and thrive in demanding environments. Graduates often decide to enter further study in accounting or law and find the instruction received during graduate study was incredibly valuable for professional groundwork. The Pace University Career Services Annual Reports suggests that the average salary for graduates is above $93,000. Topics covered during study include corporate income tax, valuation, and capital gains. Upon graduation students have had the opportunity to join the ranks of respected businesses like Deloitte & Touche, LLP, Ernst & Young, Philip Morris, and BNY Mellon.

St. John’s University (New York)

The Peter J. Tobin College of Business

Established in 1870, St. John’s University in New York City is a private, Roman Catholic college, and it was founded by the Vincentian Fathers. The school was originally located in Brooklyn within the neighborhood of Bed-Stuy but added several campuses across the world over the next century with additional locations in Rome, Italy, Oakdale, New York, and Staten Island. There are over 15,500 students attending the college, which was founded as a way to provide poor students in the area with an opportunity to get a good education. The values cited as important to the university stem from the life of St. Vincent de Paul, who is the patron saint of Christian charity.

Accounting, Master of Business Administration

Obtaining an MBA in accounting from St. John’s offers students the opportunity to enter the workforce at the corporate management level or to work in public accountancy. In the program, students learn about standard MBA topics like management problems and how business is impacted by society and the economy. The course aligns itself with the requirements of the New York State Education Department regarding how many credits are required for accounting and business courses and sitting for the CPA exam. Students will complete 33 credits in accounting and 36 credits in business. Students interested in a CPA license are well-served through the curriculum of the MBA in accounting. If a student obtained a degree in another area besides accounting, it’s still possible to enter this MBA program. Students simply need to take a few extra classes as part of the curriculum.

Accounting, Master of Science

Financial laws change with alacrity and it’s important for individuals working in accounting to stay abreast of the new changes to laws and accounting. The intense public scrutiny of accounting laws has led to an incredible need for new blood in the accounting industry, and an advanced degree at the graduate level opens significant opportunity for individuals looking for work as an accountant in today’s corporate environment. In addition to preparing students for work as a CPA, the program also supports students who wish to work in management or public accounting firms that offer financial services. The course takes one year and requires between 30 and 33 credits for graduation. The program is available to students on a part-time or full-time schedule, which accommodates students of different educational needs.

Public Accounting, Master of Science

Accountants who deal with individuals who pay taxes are in great demand as are individuals specializing in public accounting who may work with companies like investment groups, financial companies, and authorities who deal with the tax code. St. John’s accounting department features an MBA where students can specialize in public accounting and controllership, which provides knowledge on a vital and growing area of the tax and accounting realm. The program qualifies students to become CPAs under the official education requirements of the State of New York. However, students aren’t required to sit for the CPA exam upon graduation and may take many different routes into employment.

Taxation MBA

Combining business knowledge with accounting work is a potent study combination that creates an exceptionally well-rounded student. St. John’s MBA in taxation is one of the best options students have to enter the work force with advanced knowledge of business and how taxation impacts decisions made at the management level. Taxation can be a very technical aspect of accounting and St. John’s program seeks to clarify the advanced concepts of the industry well beyond the level a student would experience at the undergraduate level. Implications for fines and fees for large businesses require tax professionals who are able to look at the tax code from the point of view of a businessperson and find answers based upon current rulings and codes. Students are given the information and lessons they need to apply business concepts to problem solving and communication.

Taxation, Master of Science

The Internal Revenue Code is the bread and butter of the Master of Science in Taxation program at St. Johns. Classes provide significant knowledge of the tax code as well as recent tax regulations that are likely to change the way people pay their taxes. Students also take classes on recent judicial decisions and Treasure rulings, which help to keep students updated on the latest issues impacting the tax industry. It’s important that tax professionals remain updated on current tax codes, and this means that programs in taxation must provide up-to-date information and lessons on today’s important tax rulings. Note that students must currently possess a bachelor’s degree in accounting to be considered for admission into the program.

University at Albany, State University of New York (New York)

School of Business

The University of Albany is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, and it was established in 1844. The university is the oldest campus in the SUNY system and has over 17,500 students enrolled. Not only do students have access to a world-class education, but there are other cultural opportunities on campus such as a contemporary art museum. The university is also responsible for important contributions to the local economy of the state’s capital with its research into valuable biomedical advances and biotechnology. Economists have suggested that the University of Albany feeds over a billion dollars every year into the local economy.

M.S. in Taxation

One of the interesting features of Albany’s M.S. in Taxation is that it’s a program that lasts just one year and readies a student for becoming a CPA. Students who have an undergraduate degree in accounting and want to specialize in taxation for their career benefit from this master’s program that covers many facets of the tax profession in just a short time. Topics covered by the program include tax law, regulations, and current cases impacting future tax changes. Tax advisors and consultants are a vital part of the growing tax and accounting profession, and this program helps students obtain jobs with advanced knowledge in taxation that might not have been studied during undergraduate school. Taxation professionals are involved in an extraordinary number of vital aspects of modern business.

M.S. in Professional Accounting

The M.S. in Professional Accountancy is a program that is accredited by the AACSB and which takes a year when taken through the Albany School of Business. Studying at the graduate level, students are given the building blocks to their accounting education that go beyond knowledge gained in undergraduate school. Students who wish to gain an edge for the career in public accounting will want to consider this program because it’s designed to give greater knowledge of the accounting needs in specific areas of the economy such as the government, industry, and non-profit sectors. The New York State requirements for taking the CPA exam include 150 credit hours and the M.S. in Professional Accountancy satisfies that requirement. The school boasts that 16 top-tier companies and organizations actively seek out graduates and offer students the opportunity to work in many different countries around the world.

M.S. in Forensic Accounting

The focus on business and past financial decisions have created an incredible need for forensic accountants in today’s business environment. The M.S. in Forensic Accounting at Albany takes one year and is designed for students who already have a degree in accounting. A forensic accountant is often needed by business when there are suspicions of wrong-doing at a company or when fraud is suspected. A cursory glance of financial documents often isn’t sufficient for determining whether there has been a problem. Issues of dispute resolution and confirming fraud are often only possible when a forensic accountant is able to look at the “books” from a company and investigate past dealings. In addition to offering students knowledge in a dynamic area of the accounting profession, graduates also gain the 150 credit hours needed to meet the requirements fo the New York State CPA education requirements.

Master of Science Degree in Accounting

The M.S. in accounting program at Albany takes two years to complete and is designed for students who wish to enter the accounting field but haven’t yet taken any significant coursework in accounting or business. The students who apply for this program are diverse in their backgrounds and the popularity of the degree is evidence that accounting is a popular field today. This program offers the perfect chance for graduates with bachelor’s degrees to switch gears into accounting even if their undergraduate degree was a completely different industry from accounting. Someone with a degree in medieval history could enter Albany’s 2-year program and still gain enough hours to satisfy the 150 credit hour requirement of the New York State Education Department’s CPA guidelines.

M.S. in Tax Practice

Sometimes a student graduates with a bachelor’s degree and finds that they’d rather continue their education in a different field. This is the type of student that the M.S. in Tax Practice is designed to accommodate. This master’s degree takes a single year to complete and is a densely packed session of lessons on accounting and taxes. The program features classes that will teach students how to interpret tax law, which tends to seem like it was written in another language. The program also features classes on how to read and understand the regulations connected to the tax code and all of the written material that accompanies such laws.
